Scratches Director's Cut Walkthrough
Whenever you fire up the game, go to the main menu and make sure hints are turned on. (I was under the impression that they reverted back to the default OFF whenever you exited the game, but I've since discovered that only happens after the game crashes.)
I recommend turning slideshow mode OFF, and leaving the alternate controls ON. I also preferred the gamma correction set to MEDIUM.
- Enjoy the opening cutscene, and the way the reporters pronounce "Arthate." Marvel at the fact that your SUV has no license plate.
- You arrive at the manor, and park as far away as possible. Why doesn't anyone ever drive right up to the house?
- Go forward then turn right to the garage.
- You can't get in (cheap!), but on the ground to the right of the doors is a can. Pick it up.
- Turn around and go to the fountain.
- Turn left and click forward twice.
- Click the can on the "huge pool of water." It sounds like you've just tossed the can away, but you actually just filled it with water.
- I guess our reporter friend is afraid to get his feet wet, because you can't go exploring the grounds (cheap cheap!) I guess this limited epilogue is better than nothing.
- Go towards the house, and pause at the front steps. Pan right and down and click on the shiny objects for a closeup.
- Click on the hole.
- Go inside, and up to the Master Bedroom. Note the thalidomide in the dresser drawer. Seems strange that with all the looting, no one stole the drugs. (A quick internet search reveals that thalidomide was used in the 1960's to treat morning sickness, and caused severe birth defects...although today it's approved by the FDA to treat leprosy.)
- Go to the bathroom and note the window covered in mud (from the inside). Our reporter friend "forgot his flashlight." This is consistent with the unbelievability in the main game.
- If you go exploring, you will notice that only two doorknobs in the whole place have been stolen by thieves...surely even on deadline, the game designers could've come up with something better to limit gameplay?
- Go down the parlor fireplace to that dark opening in the bricks, in the back room.
- Click on the dark opening twice.
- Click on the shiny object a few times.
- Click the can of water on the darkness a couple of times.
- Go back up to the front steps and click the can of water on the hole in the ground.
- While we're out here, refill the can with water.
- Go back down to the "lair" and collect the shiny object now that the cat is gone. It's a doorknob.
- Back up to the main house, try the doorknob on the study door. Curse, then go to the kitchen and use the doorknob on the kitchen door.
- Go to the basement and grab the rag on top of the right side of the furnace.
- Spin right and down and pick up the bottle of cleaning fluid.
- Go back upstairs to the bathroom. (What would have been so difficult about leaving the back staircase intact??)
- Use the cleaning fluid and the can of water on the rag, in either order.
- Use the rag on the windows.
- Pan right and click on the shower curtain. Click on the mask.
- Leave the bathroom and go as far as the gallery doors. Listen to the strange noises start.
- Go back to the bathroom and click on the shower curtain twice.
- Sit back for the extended closing cutscenes.
- Fire up a new game of "Director's Cut" main game, and chuckle at how our reporter friend is now the voice we hear whenever we click the magnifying glass on an item in inventory.
